Alfred Hayter is the production editor (in title, though in reality the chief sub-editor) of The Sunday Independent newspaper in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is on enforced leave and living out a whim that has become reality – travelling around the United States on a motorbike, a BMW R 1200 RT, courtesy of BMW Motorrad South Africa and North America. His chief interests are things mechanical (though he is poor mechanic) and things that living. Not good bed fellows (and don’t ask about the carbon footprint this whim is leaving on the planet). He will be taking photos and writing about his experiences (expurgated).
